My work is largely perceptual. It is done directly from nature or from photographs I have taken of nature. I love the mystery of looking at a flower up close or a land/sea scape at a distance, and, responding to each without knowing where I am going or how I'm going to get there.
I begin. As I make my first marks I am free to go in any direction. Each new mark closes down the possibilities until the work becomes itself. The end product, however much it resembles the original object or vista, is always a surprise to me.
The process is everything. In the "doing" of the work I lose myself. It always seems impossible in the beginning. Then, like the runner I find my pace and then, my joy. In the end I realize that something has come from me that I can reach in no other way.
